Lunch Discussion
This week’s discussion will be led by Honors College student, and regular LD attendee and facilitator, Neil Hester, and Thomas Reynolds, FYE Coordinator and Honors advisor. Neil has decided to be cryptic with the topic, simply saying that the topic is “very much relevant to everyone.” So make room in your schedule to attend Lunch Discussion this week!

Lunch Discussion is held every Friday from 12:00-1:00 pm in the Horn/Knapp Residence Hall southwest lobby lounge. Enter the building through the west-facing central doors (facing the band practice parking lot) and turn right to find the lounge. Food and great discussion are always provided!

It’s not too late to join the Honors Book Club!
The Honors Book Club continues through April!  If you would like to join us in reading our final book of the semester, The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde, plan to attend our meetings on Wednesday, April 4th and 18th from 4:00-5:00pm.  Please email sarah.timmons@ttu.edu to join or for more information.

April 10th 12-1 pm (you can count this as an Honors Event if you need to)

Engaged and Integrated Scholar Series
The Office of Community Engagement invites the Honors College staff and students to attend the upcoming Engaged and Integrated Scholar series on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. in the TLPDC, Room 153.

This is a lunch event which spotlights Texas Tech University faculty who participate in engaged scholarship while integrating their methodologies and findings into their professional work, pedagogy, and classroom performance expectation. The series is designed to increase faculty, student, and staff understanding of what engaged and integrated scholarship is, expound on different methodologies utilized in such scholarship, examine differing theoretical perspectives of engaged scholarship, and encourage cross-institutional discussion and collaboration of engaged and integrated research. Lunch will be provided to all registered attendees.
Please refer to the attached flyer or contact Sarah.Shiver@ttu.edu for more information.

March Prompt

Here is the prompt for this month's reflection papers:

Choose one of the events that you attended this month and connect it to a theory or the coursework in one or more of your classes.

Remember: You are still responsible for the hours for the month of April, even though this is your last reflection paper. If you do not complete the hours for April, you will not have completed the program, and you will not be eligible for a scholarship!!

Lunch Discussion
This week’s discussion will be led by Professor Brian Shannon from the TTU School of Law. Professor Shannon serves as the Faculty Athletics Representative to the NCAA/Big 12 for Texas Tech and his topic relates to his role. Here is what he has to say:

The NCAA Board of Directors (on which President Bailey serves) recently adopted academic reforms that will likely have a substantial impact in future years. I will provide a few highlights and address how they might impact future championships such as the NCAA’s March Madness tournaments in men’s and women’s basketball.

For some background information:

In addition, although we are of course in the midst of NCAA basketball’s March Madness, there has been significant discussion in the last few months about a possible playoff system for major college football. Academic issues pertaining to these topics are often not discussed or raised, but should they have relevance?

Consider:

This latter document is a statement by the 1A FAR association, which is an organization of faculty athletics representatives at NCAA Division I institutions in the Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly known as Division 1A. The mission of the 1A Faculty Athletics Representatives is to advocate for effective interaction and academic and fiscal balance between an institution's academic mission and its intercollegiate program. I serve as the Big 12 Conference’s representative to the national board.

Thanks, Saba!

Meeting Minutes/upcoming events for March

Hola Passportees!

Firstly, I'd like to thank those of you who attended the meeting last friday! It went quite well. Academic Events/Guest Speakers (Anyone interested in Chemistry?)

There are two events coming up hosted by the Chemistry department:

February 21- 7:30 pm Chemistry Lecture
February 22- 4:00 pm Chemistry Lecture

Both of these lectures are in room 113 (as far as I know now, I will update this if it changes!). Before you dismiss these because the word "lecture" is in the title, you should definitely consider going! I attended one such lecture last semester, and the guest speakers are very intent on making things interesting. Unlike class, you won't have to take notes, won't be tested...etc. It's definitely worth it to go and maybe learn something new! If you do go, I will be attending one of these (probably the first on on the 21st) so come find me and I will sign your sheet as proof and make sure to mark you present. If I am not at the one you go to, then please get the guest speaker to sign your sheet. Usually there is an opportunity after the lecture to come up to the speaker and ask questions/talk with them, so let them know you are a part of the passport program for the Honors College and I'm sure they would love to sign for you.

Upcoming Honors Events

Hey guys,
As you know, Honors College events have no limit for the number of hours you can attend. February happens to have quite a few events that you can take part in and enjoy, AND you won't have to skimp on the hours at these events for them to fit the criteria!! Plus, you get to meet other Honors students, and participate in some really fun and engaging discussions! I hope you will all take advantage of these opportunities listed below. Remember too that things like the book club and lunch discussion (and pizza with a prof when offered) happen repetitively throughout the semester and they are great resources for hours and for getting more involved socially with other Honors students like all of us!

Here are some of those events and their descriptions as posted in the weekly email:

Honors College Book Club
The book club will be discussing a new book, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, for its February meetings. Everyone who enjoys reading and discussing books is welcome to attend, and the Honors College provides the reading selections to the students. For information on meeting times, where to pick up books, or getting on the club e-mail list, contact kimberly.lundberg@ttu.edu.

"A Night at the Casino" - Semi Formal
Join SAB and HON at our 5th annual semi-formal on February 18th from 8pm-11pm in the ballroom of the SUB. The theme this year is "A Night at the Casino". We will have roulette, Texas Hold Em', and blackjack tables set up at the semi-formal for you to gamble on! We will provide you with poker chips when you arrive and at the end of the night you can use those chips to bid on prizes! It’s a night of gambling, dinner, dancing, prizes and more! You are also welcome to bring a non-Honors date to the event. Tickets are $5 a person and can be picked up at the front office of McClellan Hall. Ticket includes admission, dinner, poker chips, and a t-shirt. For more information contact lindzi.shanks@ttu.edu. Tickets are limited so get your tickets while they are available.

Karaoke Night
Do you love to sing? Join SAB for Karaoke Night! On Sunday, February 12th from 6-8pm, we will have a karaoke machine in the first floor kitchen of Gordon Hall for students to come down and show off their singing skills. We want terrible singers too! (That's half the fun!) We will also have free food for everyone in attendance. For more information contact Lindzi Shanks at lindzi.shanks@ttu.edu.

Main Event Bowling Night
Sick of sitting at home on a Friday night with nothing to do? Join the Student Activities Board for a fun-filled night of bowling and games at Main Event on Friday, Feb 10th. We will meet in front of McClellan hall at 7:30pm and drive over together. This event is free for the first 30 students who RSVP. You must RSVP to lindzi.shanks@ttu.edu no later than Feb 8th.

Lunch Discussion
This week’s discussion will be led by Dr. Gary Elbow, an Honors professor and Associate Vice Provost. Dr. Elbow’s topic is titled, “Science Skepticism: Causes and Consequences,” and he has the following to say:

Skepticism about the products of scientific research has become quite common in recent years. We all know about anti-Darwinists, who claim that evolution is “just a theory,” and has not been validated. More recently, many parents of young children have come to believe that there is a link between autism and childhood vaccination, especially the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine. Similarly, many global warming skeptics argue that global warming is just a scheme cooked up by greedy scientists who are angling to get more research funds, or that global warming, if it does exist, is the product of natural processes and that human activities are not significant causal agents. Why are there so many people who refuse to believe findings that are widely accepted and validated by qualified scientists? And what are the potential impacts of this skepticism? This lunch discussion probes these questions.

February Prompt

Compare and contrast the events that you attended and why you chose them. How have the events made you feel more connected to your university? Which of the events especially contributed to this and why?

  • The Honors Weekly Email is your best resource for finding these events
Academic Events/Guest Speakers:
Performing Arts:
Visual Arts:
  • Things like art symposiums, first friday art trail, or film series will count for this
  • Techannounce will announce these sort of things

Community/Lubbock Events:
  • Friends of the Library valentine's booksale (ask me about this if you want to attend and I can get you contact information)
  • Idalou Apple Orchard-we may take a trip here for one of our meetings or something, but it is family-owned, and if you would like to use this as an event you need to contact the owner and ask for a tour
  • National Ranching Heritage Center-great museum to visit (be realistic with hours on these things; I've been to these places and can say it doesn't take 4 hours to go through them) :)
  • Windmill Museum
  • Lubbock Symphony Orchestra performances (these will come up on the Honors Weekly email sometimes and you can get free tickets if you jump on the chance)
  • Plays and other dramas are also done outside of the University and can count as part of your hours
  • http://events.lubbockonline.com/lubbock-tx/events/lubbock+events
  • I have provided you with a link to events in Lubbock that you can consult. Please ask me first before choosing an event from this site to attend to make sure that it will count toward your hours!
As always, ask if you have something in mind that is not on this list. You will be asked to provide proof of attendance for all of your events. This can include things like tickets from the event, a program, a signature from a performer or group leader, or a pictures of yourself at the event (ONLY IF NO OTHER PROOF IS AVAILABLE).

If you attend museums please ask for a signature from the curator or tour guide as proof of your attendance.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, and there will always be changes. If you want to post something on here for you to share with your fellow students, please do so in the comments sections! If you have any questions, just email me at clara.bush@ttu.edu.

Hours Turn-in

Ok guys,

A few of you asked me how you would be turning things in, so here is your answer:

In the Honors College (McClellan Hall), right outside of Thomas Reynolds's office, there will be a box for you to turn in your materials. I can also use this box to send out hard copies of things to you if you need them, so be checking your email/the blog for updates on that sort of thing. If you don't know where Thomas's office is, just ask at the front desk of the Honors College and they will direct you. The boxes, once again, will be just outside of Thomas's office on a bookshelf (NOT in his office, so don't bother him by asking where the boxes are!) :)

Event Types/Number of hours counted for them

Honors College Events: No maximum

Academic Events/Guest Speakers: Maximum of 5 hours per month

Performing Arts: Maximum of 5 hours per month
